A WORD OF HELP

Let’s keep
the game going.

Rules, answers and a little help when you need it.

Start with the basics.

Open a game mode, choose categories and difficulty, then follow the setup prompts. Keep the screen facing the speaker while the others guess. Describe words in any order.

Don’t say the answer, a part of it, spell it out or rhyme with it. Your group decides what counts as fair play. It’s fine to read a definition aloud if you need help; a correct guess still earns the normal point.

Use Correct to mark a guess, Pass to skip a word and Info to read its definition and pronunciation. You can undo a mark while its card is still open. For a guided practice, open How to Play → Try the tutorial in the app.

Choose your way to play.

Free Play
Play without a timer or a winner. Change cards whenever you like; Back restores earlier cards and their marks.
Countdown
Teams take timed turns. Each correct word earns one point. The highest score wins after the selected rounds or target, with the chosen finish rule. Pass allowances reset each turn.
Time-Trial
Each team completes one card per round. The stopwatch stops when every word is correct or passed. The lowest cumulative active time divided by correct words wins. Passed words do not count as correct, but time spent on them still counts.
Cooperative
Work together to reach a word target before the shared countdown runs out.

Good questions.

Does Ambage need the internet?

No. The word catalogue, definitions and gameplay are on your phone. This website, email, App Store downloads and anything you deliberately share use their own internet services.

Why has the game paused or hidden the card?

Ambage conceals the words when play is paused, a definition is open or the app is interrupted. This helps keep the answers with the speaker. Return to the app and use the on-screen Resume control when everyone is ready.

Does opening Info stop the timer?

Timed modes have a definition-pause setting in their setup. If it is enabled, opening a definition pauses the clock. If it is disabled, the clock keeps running. Manual pauses and app interruptions still suspend play.

How do I change sound, vibration or appearance?

Open Settings from Home. Choose the timer sound or Off, toggle vibration, and select System, Light or Dark appearance. Also check your iPhone’s volume and sound settings if you can’t hear the timer.

Why are words repeating?

A small category or difficulty selection has a smaller pool of eligible words. Try more categories, a different difficulty or mixing in easier words. Clear Word History resets past repeat tracking; it does not add new words to the catalogue.

What does Clear Word History remove?

In Settings, Clear Word History removes the latest game’s word review and past repeat tracking. An unfinished game keeps its current card, marks, review and timer. Settings, teams and separately flagged words are kept.

Where can I see the words from a game?

Open Explore Your Words from Home. Review the current or latest game and filter by All, Correct, Passed or Unanswered. Choose Flagged to see saved word issues from all games.

How do I remove all the app’s saved data?

Use Delete App on your iPhone to remove the installed app and its local data. Offload App keeps its documents and data. Device or iCloud backups are managed separately in your Apple settings and may restore app data later.

Found a word that needs a second look?

In Explore Your Words, use Flag this word to note a clue, difficulty, pronunciation or factual issue. Flags stay on your phone until you choose to share them.

Under the Flagged filter, Share flagged words opens the iPhone share sheet with all saved flags. Review the text and choose where to send it. Flagging a word by itself does not send a report.

When contacting support, include the word, category and what needs changing. For an app problem, add the game mode, app version, iPhone model, iOS version and the steps that led to it. Screenshots can help; remove any personal information first.
